How this works

If you file your Income Tax Return after the due date (31 July 2026 for most individual taxpayers, FY 2025-26), Section 234F imposes a late filing fee: โ‚น1,000 if your total income is up to โ‚น5 lakh, โ‚น5,000 if it's above โ‚น5 lakh, and โ‚น0 if your income is below the basic exemption limit and you weren't required to file at all.

Separately, if you still owe unpaid tax when you file late, Section 234A charges 1% simple interest per month (or part of a month) on that outstanding amount, counted from the day after the due date until the date you actually file. Even a few days into a new month counts as a full month for this calculation.

This calculator adds the Section 234F fee and Section 234A interest together to give you a total estimated penalty for filing late โ€” enter your income, any unpaid tax, and your actual (or planned) filing date to see the numbers update instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a penalty if I have no tax due but file late?

Yes โ€” Section 234F's late filing fee (โ‚น1,000 or โ‚น5,000) applies regardless of whether you owe tax, as long as your income is above the basic exemption limit and you file after the due date. Section 234A interest only applies if you actually have unpaid tax.

What counts as a "part of a month" for 234A interest?

Even one day into a new month is treated as a full month for Section 234A interest purposes, so filing on the 1st of a month versus the 28th of the previous month can make the same difference as filing a full month later.

Does this calculator account for the basic exemption limit exactly?

It uses a simplified threshold to decide whether Section 234F applies at all. Your specific exemption limit can vary based on age, regime chosen and other factors โ€” check the official e-filing portal or a tax professional if you're near the boundary.

Can I still file after the due date?

Yes, a belated return can typically be filed up to a later deadline set each year (usually 31 December of the assessment year), but it attracts the Section 234F fee and Section 234A interest shown here, and you lose the ability to carry forward certain losses.
