How this works

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax, charged at 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% depending on the category of goods or services. This calculator either adds GST on top of a base amount (to find the final price a customer pays) or removes GST from a GST-inclusive amount (to find the original base price) โ€” both are common needs depending on whether you're pricing a product or reading an invoice.

For any GST amount, the total is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) when the transaction happens within one state โ€” each gets half the total GST rate. For inter-state transactions, the full amount is charged as IGST instead. This calculator shows the CGST/SGST split assuming an intra-state transaction, which is the most common case for small businesses and everyday purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which GST rate should I use?

It depends on the category: most daily essentials are 5% or 12%, most standard goods and services fall under 18%, and luxury or sin goods (like cars, tobacco) are taxed at 28%. Check the official GST rate schedule if you're unsure about a specific product.

What's the difference between adding and removing GST?

'Add GST' takes a base price and tells you the final price a customer pays. 'Remove GST' does the reverse โ€” if you have a GST-inclusive price (like an invoice total), it extracts the original base price and the tax portion.

Is this useful for filing GST returns?

This calculator is for quick estimates on individual amounts โ€” for actual GST return filing, you'll need your GSTIN, invoices, and the official GST portal or a qualified accountant.
