At around ₹25,000 a month (₹3 lakh a year), you spend enough that the right card pays back real money — but not so much that premium cards with high fees make sense yet. The trick is simple: pick the card that rewards your biggest spending category, not the one with the loudest ad.

Step 1: Find your biggest category

Open your last two bank or UPI statements and group your spends. For most people at this level it's one of these:

  • Online shopping (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra)
  • Food & groceries (Swiggy, Zomato, BigBasket, Blinkit)
  • Fuel (petrol/diesel)
  • UPI / everyday (small payments by QR)

Whichever is largest decides your card. A card that gives 5% on your top category will almost always beat a flat 1.5% card at this spend.

Step 2: Match a card to it

Step 3: Will the fee pay back?

Most good cards at this level charge a joining/annual fee of roughly ₹500–₹1,000, usually waived once you spend ₹1.5–2 lakh in a year. At ₹25,000 a month you're at ₹3 lakh a year, so you'll clear that waiver comfortably — the card effectively becomes free. Always confirm the current fee and waiver on the bank's own page before applying.

If you'd rather pay nothing at all, a lifetime-free card gives you most of the value with zero fee to worry about.

The honest bottom line

  • One category dominates your spend → get the 5% card for that category.
  • Your spend is spread evenly → a flat all-online cashback card is simpler and still strong.
  • You want zero fee and zero thinking → a lifetime-free card, ideally one you can link to UPI.
  • Whatever you pick, pay the full bill every month. Interest of 36–45% a year wipes out any cashback instantly.

FAQ

Is one card enough at ₹25,000 a month? Yes. A second card only helps once you have two clearly different big categories (say, heavy fuel and heavy online).

Should I get a premium card at this spend? Usually not — the fee and spend conditions rarely pay back below ₹50,000–₹75,000 a month.

Does using a card build my credit score? Yes, if you pay in full and on time. It's the fastest honest way to build CIBIL.

Fees and benefits are set by the issuing bank and can change — always confirm on the bank's page before you apply.
