RuPay Credit Card on UPI Explained

How it works, plus 8 RuPay cards compared — Kiwi, HDFC, Axis, SBI & more.

Honest guide, updated 2026

If you've wondered why your Visa or Mastercard credit card can't be linked to Google Pay or PhonePe, here's the answer: only RuPay credit cards can be used for UPI payments in India. This is a deliberate NPCI design decision to promote domestic payment infrastructure — Visa and Mastercard credit cards remain excluded from credit-on-UPI entirely. Below: how it actually works, plus an honest look at 8 RuPay cards active in India right now.

How RuPay Credit Card on UPI Actually Works

  1. Get a RuPay credit card from any issuing bank (this is the only network that supports credit-on-UPI)
  2. Link it in any UPI app — Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, Paytm, or the issuer's own app
  3. Scan and pay at any UPI QR code, exactly like paying from your bank account — except now you're spending on credit instead of your own money
  4. Earn rewards on that transaction, since it's routed through your credit card — something a regular UPI-linked bank account never gives you

The practical upside: every ₹5 tea stall payment, grocery scan, or online UPI checkout now earns cashback or points, plus you get your card's normal interest-free credit period (typically 20-50 days) before the bill is due.

Quick Comparison

Card Fee UPI Reward Rate Notable Extra
Kiwi RuPay ₹0, permanent 1.5% base (up to 5% with paid Neon tier) Fully digital, no credit history needed
HDFC RuPay ₹99 + GST (currently free via promo) 1-3% by category Floater card — needs an existing HDFC card
SBM Novio ₹0, permanent 5-10 coins/₹100 FD-backed, good for building credit
Yes Bank Kredit.Pe ₹0, permanent Up to 3%, 5% on digital gold Simple flat-rate cashback
Zagg (Yes Bank) ₹0, permanent 3% Zagg coins 2 lounge visits/quarter (spend-gated)
SBI IRCTC RuPay ₹500 joining / ₹300 annual 10% on AC train bookings Railway lounge access, built for train travelers
Axis Neo RuPay ₹0, permanent 10% off 3 named merchants Best for Blinkit/Myntra/BookMyShow users
Axis Airtel RuPay ₹0, permanent 25% on Airtel bills Best for heavy Airtel/utility spenders

Six of these eight are genuinely fee-free. The two exceptions (HDFC RuPay and SBI IRCTC) charge a fee because they're built around a specific benefit — HDFC's is layered onto an existing card relationship, and SBI's funds railway lounge access.

1. Kiwi RuPay — best all-purpose digital-first UPI card

Already covered in our beginner's guide — fully digital, no credit history required, 1.5% base UPI cashback with an optional paid tier for higher rates.

2. HDFC RuPay — best if you already hold another HDFC card

This is a "floater" card — issued as an add-on RuPay card alongside an existing HDFC Visa/Mastercard/Diners card, not standalone. You get 3% CashPoints on groceries/dining/PayZapp, 2% on utilities, 1% elsewhere (capped 500 points/category/month). Standard fee is ₹99 + GST (waived on ₹25,000/year spend), though it's currently being offered free under a limited-time promotion — confirm the current offer status before assuming permanent LTF.

3. SBM Novio — best for building credit via FD

An FD-backed card (minimum ₹5,000 FD) with no joining or annual fee — a solid option if you want to build credit history safely. Earn 5-10 Novio Coins per ₹100 spent, including UPI transactions, with a low 2.49% forex markup as a bonus for occasional international use.

4. Yes Bank Kredit.Pe — best for simple flat cashback

Lifetime free, with up to 3% cashback on general spends and a standout 5% on digital gold purchases. Straightforward, no complicated category structure to track.

Apply for Yes Bank Kredit.Pe →

5. Zagg (Yes Bank) RuPay — best if you want lounge access on a free card

Genuinely rare combination: zero fee, zero spend-based fee waiver needed, but still includes 2 complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter (gated behind a ₹50,000 spend in the prior 3 months). Earns 3% Zagg Coins on UPI spends plus a 1% fuel surcharge waiver.

6. SBI IRCTC RuPay — best for frequent train travelers

The only fee-based card in this list that's worth it specifically for one reason: 4 complimentary railway lounge visits a year plus up to 10% value-back on AC train ticket bookings through IRCTC. If you don't travel by train regularly, skip this one — the ₹500 joining / ₹300 annual fee isn't justified by the base 1 point per ₹125 rate elsewhere.

7. Axis Neo RuPay — best for Blinkit/Myntra/BookMyShow regulars

Already covered in our lifetime-free and beginner guides — flat discounts (not points) on three named merchants, lifetime free, genuinely useful if your spending already concentrates there.

Apply for Axis Neo RuPay →

8. Axis Airtel RuPay — best for Airtel/utility-heavy spenders

Lifetime free, with an outsized 25% cashback on Airtel mobile/broadband/DTH bills (through the Airtel Thanks app) and 10% on other utility bills and select platforms like Zomato and Blinkit. A strong pick specifically if Airtel is your telecom provider.

So, Which One Should You Get?

  • Want one simple, genuinely free UPI card with no strings? → Kiwi or Yes Bank Kredit.Pe
  • Already an Airtel customer with meaningful monthly bills? → Axis Airtel RuPay
  • Order regularly from Blinkit, Myntra, or BookMyShow? → Axis Neo RuPay
  • Travel by train often? → SBI IRCTC RuPay (the one card here worth paying a fee for)
  • Want lounge access without paying anything? → Zagg RuPay
  • Already hold an HDFC card and want an add-on RuPay option? → HDFC RuPay
  • Building credit from scratch and have savings for an FD? → SBM Novio

Since most of these are genuinely free, there's little cost to holding two or three that match different parts of your spending — a common combination is one flat-rate free card (Kiwi or Kredit.Pe) plus one merchant-specific card matching your biggest recurring spend (Airtel, Blinkit, etc.).

FAQs

Does every bank offer a RuPay credit card? Most major issuers now do — HDFC, SBI, Axis, Yes Bank, and several NBFC/fintech partners. Availability and specific card variants shift over time, so check your preferred bank's current RuPay lineup.

Is there a downside to using a credit card for UPI instead of my bank account? The main one: if you don't pay your statement in full, you'll pay interest on that ₹50 tea-stall purchase just like any other credit card spend. Treat it like normal credit card usage — pay in full, on time, every cycle.

Can I link a RuPay credit card to Google Pay or PhonePe directly? Yes — once you've set your credit card PIN (usually via the issuer's IVR or app), you can add it as a payment method in any major UPI app, not just the issuing bank's own app.

Fees, rewards, and terms are set by the respective banks and can change — always check the issuer's current terms before applying. This guide reflects publicly available information as of 2026 and is not financial advice.
